TOPAZ
Topaz occurs in a range of colours, but the most valuable one is Imperial topaz - golden to yellow-orange, and quite easily confused with citrine. Beware deceptive names such as golden topaz, Brazilian topaz, citrine topaz, and smoky topaz. None of these is really topaz.
Real
topaz of less desirable colours (colourless) is often heat treated or irradiated
to make blue or pink , and is much less valuable than natural Imperial topaz.
Blue topaz is most commonly seen, and is nearly always irradiated. The topaz Byzantium has in stock at the moment is treated blue topaz - which is more valuable size for size than stones such as amethyst, garnet, and citrine, but less so than emeralds and rubies and of course, imperial topaz.
Blue topaz
is quite similar in appearance to aquamarine, but is again, less valuable. It
has a more 'steely' blue, without the hint of green often seen in aquamarine -
beware topaz passed off as aquamarine.
